René Orea has a simultaneous training in both Western Classical and Latin-American musical traditions. He has been granted several times by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec and the Canada Council for the Arts. He also won the 2005-Étoiles-Galaxie Prize from Radio-Canada, a 1st Composition Prize at the 1st Latin-American Meeting of Flutes (Caracas), and two artistic residencies: one at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (UNESCO-Aschberg program), and another at the Mai-Montreal arts interculturels.
His works and performances have been heard in concert in several countries: Canada, England, France, Germany, Peru, Portugal, Switzerland USA and Venezuela.
He also teaches in several projects and institutions.
An important part of his musical education was developed at the Venezuelan National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras (“El Sistema”).
At the University of Montreal, he obtained two Master Degrees (Flute Performance and Composition), and a Ph. D in Musicology.
